How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Match packaging to gauge: thinner than 16 ga (under 0.0508 in) must ship in boxes, crates, or wrapped bundles securely metal‑strapped per Note 106722; 16 ga or thicker may go loose or packaged.
  2. Protect edges and holes: add corner guards and edge protectors, interleave sheets with paper or film so perforations don’t hook and scuff, and use VCI paper if tarnish control is needed.
  3. For palletized or loose heavy plates, use a rigid base (plywood deck or runners), band firmly to prevent slide, keep zero overhang, and block/braces so bundles can be forklifted safely.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: “Perforated plate/sheet, copper/brass/bronze, NMFC 30720, Class 77.5, non-hazardous,” plus gauge, alloy, piece count, and packaging type to avoid reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 77.5 with no density requirement speeds quoting and lowers reclassification risk.
  • Clear packaging rules by gauge reduce accessorials and damage claims, protecting margins on high-value nonferrous metals.
  • Alloy‑agnostic coverage (copper, brass, bronze) simplifies mixed‑SKU consolidation under one NMFC item.
  • Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure competitive LTL rates and faster transit.
