How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 30980 and Class 70; specify “copper brazing paste, boxed” to prevent reclass and speed terminal handling.
- Use leak-resistant inner containers (cartridges, jars, or syringes) and line corrugated boxes with a poly bag and absorbent pad to catch seepage.
- Keep cartons upright and protected from heat; paste consistency holds best between 40–85°F—avoid freezing that can separate binders.
- Palletize boxes tightly with stretch wrap and corner boards; add “This Side Up” and “Keep From Heat” labels for HVAC or plumbing shop deliveries.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and quoting, eliminating density calculations and cutting time spent on pre-shipment audits.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat accessorials and opens up more carrier options for nationwide LTL lanes.
- Boxed requirement supports small-part fulfillment—combine multiple cartridges per carton to lower cost per unit shipped.
- Leak-preventive packing reduces claims, protecting margins for HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing manufacturers.
