How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Cartonize buckles in sturdy corrugated boxes (32 ECT or higher) and use inner bags or dividers so clasp and take‑up sections don’t abrade each other; separate by finish (e.g., nickel vs. black oxide).
- Add VCI paper or a small desiccant when shipping to humid regions to keep sheet steel clean and rust‑free during LTL transit.
- Right-size the box: fill voids with kraft or foam to stop shifting, keep cartons under ~50 lb for hand loading, or palletize multiple cartons and stretch‑wrap tightly.
- Verify counts by weight: record the average unit weight, tare the box, and note counts on the carton label (e.g., “Buckles—Size 38 mm—Qty 200”) to reduce OS&D disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 rating streamlines quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees for metal apparel hardware.
- Boxed packaging simplifies handling and allows better stacking, lowering damage risk and potential claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure competitive LTL rates without hazmat surcharges.
- Consistent SKU separation and inner packing accelerates warehouse receiving and improves inventory accuracy, cutting labor and dwell time.
