How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure each boxed or crated unit and compute density (weight ÷ cubic feet). Example: 72x20x8 in at 110 lb ≈ 13.2 PCF; higher PCF typically yields a lower class.
- Choose packaging by build: kit-style pergolas can ship in reinforced cartons; assembled wood or metal arches should be crated with cross-bracing to prevent racking.
- Palletize long spans along the pallet length, use corner boards and steel or heavy poly banding, and keep footprint within standard LTL limits to avoid oversize fees.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 33610, density (PCF), piece count, and 'Subject to Item 170' on the BOL. Bag and secure hardware; label fragile surfaces and do-not-stack if applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density to improve pricing: compact packaging or partial disassembly can raise PCF and reduce the freight class for lower LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and simplifies scheduling, helping you secure faster transits and more competitive quotes.
- Crating and bracing cut damage risk on long, open-frame structures, lowering claims, reships, and downstream project delays.
- Accurate measurements and Item 170-compliant packaging reduce reweigh/reclass fees and keep invoices aligned with quoted rates.
