How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
Calculate freight class by density for each handling unit. Example: a crated skylight pallet 48x40x36 inches at 450 lb = 40 cu ft; 450/40 = 11.25 pcf.
Crate fragile architectural items (skylights, hatch covers, greenhouses) with internal bracing and corner blocks; add top-load cones and ‘Do Not Stack’ labels.
Secure liquids and pastes (e.g., waterproofing compounds) in tight-head drums or pails with closures, absorbent liners, and drum pallets; stretch-wrap and band to skids.
Separate heavy steel hardware (cribbing, frames, forms) from softer goods (asphalt planks, wood assemblies) using corrugated pads, dunnage, and edge protectors for flashing rolls.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
Density-based rating lets you optimize pack height and reduce voids to improve PCF, lowering freight class and cutting LTL costs.
One NMFC covering diverse building materials reduces SKU mapping time, speeds quoting, and helps avoid costly reclassification fees.
Consolidate mixed construction items under a single line item on the BOL for simpler documentation and fewer billing disputes.
Stronger crating for fragile components reduces OS&D claims and jobsite delays, improving delivery reliability on tight project schedules.
