How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity matches: steel smokehouse or firing doors with frames. Use Class 85 and list NMFC 34420 on the BOL (e.g., “1 steel smokehouse door with frame, NMFC 34420, Class 85”).
- Pack for edge and face protection. Crate or palletize with rigid blocking, corner guards, and banding; wrap to cover hinges and latches, and mark Do Not Stack to prevent panel warping.
- Measure the widest and tallest points, including frame ears, handles, and hinge knuckles. Even though the class is fixed, carriers still need accurate dimensions for quotes and loading.
- Plan handling at pickup and delivery. Request a liftgate if no dock is available, and schedule a delivery appointment for food-processing facilities to avoid access delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with a fixed Class 85, improving quote accuracy across carriers and lanes.
- Lower reclass and fee risk by using the exact NMFC description for steel smokehouse doors with frames.
- Fewer damage claims when doors are crated or well-palletized with solid bracing and edge protection.
- Smoother project logistics for meat plants and smokehouses by consolidating doors and frames under one clear, non-hazardous classification.
