How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each door in a double‑wall box or a framed crate, blocking around locksets, hinges, and any metal ventilators so protrusions can’t puncture the panel.
- Bag loose hardware (hinges, pulls, keys) and secure the bag inside the box or crate; add corner protectors and face sheets to protect finished surfaces.
- For multiple units, palletize boxes on a 48×40 pallet with slip sheets, strap across the width, and wrap the bundle without compressing louvers or vents.
- Print the BOL with NMFC 34440, Class 100, and note “boxed” or “crated.” Avoid blanket‑wrap or open shipping, which can trigger reclass and damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating removes density math, giving predictable LTL quotes and simpler rate shopping.
- Boxed/crated requirement aligns with NMFTA expectations, reducing reclass fees, inspections, and delivery delays.
- Non‑hazmat status broadens carrier options and consolidations with other building materials for faster transit.
- Consistent classification helps contractors and facility managers standardize bid specs and budgeting across projects.
