How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book shipments as NMFC 34282 with description: “roll-up wooden doors or partitions, packaged,” and apply fixed Class 70 on the BOL.
- Package the door coil or slat bundle in a single, tight package: edge protectors on wood slats, full wrap, and banding to prevent scuffing and spread.
- Load the roll horizontally on a pallet with blocking so it cannot roll, mark Do Not Stack, and keep handles/tracks protected inside the package.
- Measure the longest section (tracks, guides, header) so the carrier assigns proper linear footage; photograph packaging to document compliance and avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and yields more consistent LTL quotes versus density-based items.
- Clear packaging requirement (“in packages”) helps avoid inspection fees, reclass charges, and delay costs.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and accelerates tender-to-pickup timing.
- Accurate NMFC 34282 usage reduces claim exposure for fragile wooden slats and hardware, protecting margins.
