How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List your BOL as “Elevator car platforms, NMFC 34520, Class 85” to prevent reclass; density reporting is not required for this item.
- Stiffen the deck for transit: bolt the platform to a steel or hardwood skid with 4x4 runners, add blocking to prevent flex, and guard edges with angles.
- Use full crates or heavy shrink-wrap with corner boards; add a moisture barrier if the platform includes wood or composite cores.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity clearly; request liftgate, construction-site delivery, or appointment service for jobsite and high-rise shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing via Fixed Class 85—no density calculations, fewer reclass charges, and faster quoting.
- Lower damage risk by immobilizing wide, flat platforms on skids with edge protection, reducing claims and costly project delays.
- Standardized classification across suppliers simplifies procurement and strengthens carrier compliance during construction rollouts.
- Smoother jobsite logistics: proper accessorials and clear labeling cut crew downtime and crane standby costs.
