How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 34530, Class 85 on the BOL and specify “elevator car sides/tops, unattached” with packaging noted as boxes or crates.
- Pack each panel so no pieces are attached together; use foam separators, corner protectors, and banding. For crates, brace internal frames to prevent flexing.
- Palletize boxes/crates on sturdy skids, align long edges with forklift tines, and block, strap, and wrap. Mark “Do Not Stack” and “Lift From Base.”
- Real-world setup: ship six tops in two wood crates (about 96×48×10), each strapped to a 48×96 skid with surface-protection wrap and center-of-gravity labels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—no density calculation needed, streamlining LTL quoting and budgeting.
- Lower damage exposure: boxed or crated packaging protects finished stainless or laminate faces, reducing claims and rework costs.
- Fewer reclass or inspection fees by clearly citing NMFC 34530 and packaging details, improving billing accuracy and transit speed.
- Jobsite reliability: durable crating tolerates cross-docks and tight delivery windows, helping elevator contractors meet build schedules.
