How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL line as 'Elevator Guides or Guide Rails, boxed/crated' to lock in Class 55 and avoid density-based reclassifications.
- Choose rigid wood crates or heavy-duty boxes with diagonal bracing; cap rail ends, use dunnage and band to skids to prevent bending or head damage.
- Keep pieces aligned and blocked; separate machined faces with V-blocks or edge protectors and wrap steel with rust inhibitor paper.
- Confirm carrier length rules (e.g., 96 in+ handling fees), mark center of gravity and fork sides, and note rail count and lengths for terminals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 keeps LTL quotes predictable and minimizes reclass or fee disputes for elevator OEMs, fabricators, and modernization crews.
- Boxed/crated rails arrive straight and unmarred, reducing OS&D claims, site delays, and costly reships or field rework.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds carrier setup and TMS automation, improving rate shopping, label printing, and BOL accuracy.
- Efficient bundling and single-skid shipping cut handling units, lowering per-rail transport cost without affecting the class.
