Notes
Note 34732: NOTE-Applies only on flooring consisting of the following components: metal pedestals; metal stringers; metal, wood or particleboard flooring panels, with or without surface covering of same or other materials; and the necessary fittings or fastenings required for installation.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize disassembled components—panels, pedestals, and stringers—into secure packages with stretch wrap and two-way strapping; include small hardware in a sealed pouch inside the main package.
- Select pallets that support full panel length and weight; add blocking to prevent flex and edge crush. Example: use a 48x96 pallet for 8 ft platform panels.
- Add edge guards and a rigid top cap to protect finished surfaces. Keep kits together by project or zone to stop parts mixing across packages.
- Mark the BOL and labels with “NMFC 34730, Class 60, packages” and the package count. Photograph packed units before pickup for claims protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and preventing reclass surprises.
- Lower class improves LTL rates compared to higher building-material classes, cutting landed cost on multi-pallet projects.
- Clear package-based compliance minimizes reweigh, inspection, and OS&D claims—keeping sites on schedule.
- Standard, non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and reduces accessorial risk across regional lanes.
