How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as: “Panels, wire mesh with expanded plastic core, in packages — NMFC 35080, Class 250, non-hazardous.” This avoids reclass or inspection delays.
- Bundle panels tightly with edge guards, then stretch-wrap and band to a pallet or skid. Cover exposed wire mesh so it can’t snag forklift masts or other freight.
- Expect overlength rules if panels exceed 96 inches. Request carriers that accept long freight and add notes like “Top Load Only” or “Do Not Stack” when needed.
- Keep dry and flat. Use dunnage between bundles to prevent bowing and protect the expanded plastic insulation from compression or heat sources during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 250 simplifies quoting—no density calculation—making rate shopping faster across multiple LTL carriers.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces documentation complexity, speeding up tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Damage-focused packaging (edge protection, banding, mesh covers) cuts claim risk on delicate EPS cores, lowering total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC labeling (35080) reduces reclass fees, avoids inspection hold-ups, and supports predictable freight budgeting for jobsite deliveries.
