Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
35255.00 Railings, NOI:

Notes

Note 35256: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State the longest piece length, total bundle count, and “Railings, NOI – NMFC 35255” on the BOL; add clear handling notes like Do Not Stack for long members.
  2. Package by material: palletize wood with banding and edge guards; use A‑frames or pipe racks for steel/aluminum rails; bag and shrink-wrap brackets and fasteners separately.
  3. Keep rail ends flush with the pallet deck and avoid overhang; add blocking for fork clearance and strap every 3–4 feet to prevent bowing.
  4. For jobsite drops, request liftgate or construction-site access and set an appointment to prevent redelivery, detention, and limited-access fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct NMFC usage for Railings, NOI reduces reclass disputes and unexpected billing.
  • Robust bundling and edge protection lowers finish damage and claim exposure, preserving margin.
  • Tight bundles and right-length skids help avoid oversize and cubic-capacity surcharges.
  • Clear delivery instructions speed unloading at construction sites, cutting delays and add-on charges.
