How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the SDS and select the proper UN-rated tight-head drums or Package 2080 as specified; ensure gaskets and liners are compatible with coal tar solutions.
- Palletize drums upright with no overhang, band and stretch-wrap securely, and use absorbent pads or spill trays for containment during LTL cross-docking.
- Plan around temperature sensitivity—thick product moves slower in cold weather—so request minimal-transit services and avoid freezing conditions where possible.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 35320 at Class 55 and mark as hazardous; include the correct proper shipping name/ID from the SDS, shipper’s certification, and a 24-hour emergency contact.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 delivers predictable rating, reducing surprises compared to density-based freight and helping you forecast lane costs for seasonal paving work.
- Packaging in compliant drums and Package 2080 cuts leakage claims and dwell time, improving carrier acceptance of hazmat construction coatings.
- Accurate hazmat documentation prevents reclass and refusal fees, minimizing reschedules and protecting project timelines on active job sites.
- Unitizing multiple drums per pallet lowers handling touches, speeds loading, and can reduce accessorials tied to fragmented shipments.
