How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by rigidity and count: single blind sets in sturdy boxes with corner guards; multi-panel shutters or metal-cassette shades in braced crates.
- Stabilize moving parts: immobilize headrails and slats, cap motor leads, and block both ends with dense foam to prevent crush from side impacts.
- Control length surcharges: keep cartons under common over-length thresholds (e.g., 96 in) when possible, or crate long runs to prevent bowing and fees.
- Label clearly for site work: mark exterior use, orientation arrows, and “Do Not Double Stack” for boxes; include hardware bags secured inside the package.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC item for exterior window coverings avoids reclass when motors or mounting hardware are included, cutting surprise billing.
- Box vs. crate selection balances damage risk and rate: crates improve stackability and reduce claim exposure on long aluminum shutters.
- Clear accessorial planning (residential/jobsite, liftgate, appointment) prevents redispatch charges common with remodel and new-build deliveries.
- Standardized package lengths and reinforced ends reduce handling time and claim costs, improving carrier acceptance and LTL pricing leverage.
