How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm scope: use NMFC 35670 for non‑cast aluminum architectural work (e.g., handrail components, fascia trim, louvers, brackets), not wall sections or curtain-wall assemblies.
- Choose packaging to prevent bend or scratch damage: long extrusions ride best in a rigid wood crate; shorter fittings can go in double‑wall boxes with edge and corner protectors.
- Palletize for LTL: place boxes or crates on a sturdy skid, block and brace, then band and wrap. Note longest piece length to anticipate any carrier overlength fees.
- Bill of Lading: list NMFC 35670, Class 100. This is a fixed class (no density needed). Avoid mixing cast aluminum or wall-section goods that would trigger a different item.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100 reduces reclass disputes and short‑pays.
- Packaging matched to slender aluminum profiles cuts damage claims and costly remakes.
- Clear scope (non‑cast, not wall sections) improves compliance and speeds carrier acceptance.
- Non‑hazardous, box/crate-friendly commodity broadens carrier options and supports competitive LTL rates.
