How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book under NMFC 35780 at Class 85 and list packaging as packages; note that battens are nested to reflect the correct item setup on the BOL.
- Nest lengths tightly and band with plastic-coated strap every 24–36 inches; add corner boards and end caps to stop bowing and rub damage.
- Flag long freight early (e.g., 12–20 ft battens) to avoid surprises; mark center-of-gravity and request overlength handling if your carrier requires it.
- Keep bundles straight with wood dunnage on the bottom and between layers; stretch-wrap to keep aluminum clean and prevent scuffing in cross-docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means predictable rating with no density calculation, reducing reclass risk and unexpected invoice adjustments.
- Nested packaging minimizes cube and handling touches, improving dock efficiency and lowering damage-related costs for long, slender profiles.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and cuts compliance time, helping distributors and jobsite deliveries move faster.
- Clear item targeting for aluminum battens improves rate shopping and carrier acceptance, accelerating quotes for facade, roofing, and trim suppliers.
