How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before booking: weigh the packaged bundle, measure the full palletized footprint and height, then divide weight by cubic feet to determine PCF for class rating.
- Package to Item 170: strap sheets tight on a sturdy pallet, add edge guards and top/bottom boards, and use corner protectors to prevent bending and dented hems.
- Keep lengths manageable and clearly oriented; mark the long side and use “Do Not Stack” or spacer blocks when thin panels or flashing could crease under load.
- Document precisely on the BOL: list NMFC 35850, the calculated density or class, count of bundles/pieces, and note protective packaging to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend with density-based pricing—tighter bundling increases PCF and can qualify your metalwork for a lower class and better LTL rates.
- Cut reclass and inspection fees by meeting Item 170 packaging standards and labeling long, thin pieces that are prone to damage.
- Reduce claims on finished trim, gutters, and fascia by using edge protection and rigid top decking to stop crush and crease damage.
- Speed up quoting and carrier acceptance with a clear NMFC match (35850), accurate PCF, and consistent packaging practices across projects.
