Note 36006: NOTE-Also applies on geometric or three-dimensional (3-D) panels.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe precisely on the BOL: “Metal ceiling or interior siding panels/moldings/pans/ornaments, boxed, NMFC 36005,” and note any mixed materials per the governing note.
- Palletize cartons without overhang; align long trims on the pallet’s long side, add rigid corner boards and a top cap, then strap or stretch-wrap to prevent bending.
- Protect finished faces (embossed or powder-coated) with poly film or foam interleave; use edge guards and mark pallets “Do Not Clamp,” “This Side Up,” and “Do Not Stack.”
- If metal is combined with wood, insulation, or other backers, verify applicability against Note, item 36006, and include spec sheets or cut lists with the paperwork.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC 36005 usage reduces reclass and inspection fees by matching descriptions to boxed metal ceiling and siding components.
- Boxed packaging with proper bracing cuts claim rates on thin, dent-prone panels and decorative ornaments, protecting margins.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving quote speed and transit predictability.
- Clear itemization of panels, moldings, pans, and ornaments supports accurate LTL rating and capacity planning for long or flat freight.
