How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference the note-based rule on paperwork: list “Roof Capping—iron/steel/tin, per NMFC Note 35932” on the BOL to prevent reclass.
- Bundle long pieces with wood dunnage every 4–6 ft and band with steel or PET strapping; add edge protectors to stop creasing and kink damage.
- Protect finishes: wrap galvanized, painted, or tin plate caps with VCI or poly, interleave sheets to prevent scuffs, and cap open ends against moisture.
- Confirm the longest length (e.g., 120 in ridge caps) and pallet footprint; select carriers equipped for overlength freight and budget for related accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
