Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
36090.00 Chimney Caps or Cowls, iron or steel, sheet or sheet and cast combined, other than rotating, in boxes or crates, subject to Item 170 and having a density in pounds per cubic foot of:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the item is a non-rotating chimney cap or cowl made of iron or steel, then classify under NMFC 36090 with density-based rating per Item 170.
  2. Compute density from packed weight and exterior carton/crate volume. Example: 24x24x18 in crate at 60 lb = 6 ft³; density = 10 PCF (60 ÷ 6).
  3. Protect thin sheet sections and cast collars with foam blocks, edge guards, and cross-bracing. Use double-wall boxes for small units; choose a rigid crate for larger, protruding cowls.
  4. Increase density by packing multiple caps in one box when safe, using spacers so parts don’t nest and deform. Mark This Side Up and palletize with no overhang, tight strapping, and full stretch wrap.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based classes let you optimize packaging and cube, often lowering freight class and cutting LTL rates on multi-unit shipments.
  • Compliance with Item 170 and using boxes or crates prevents reclass charges, inspections, and delivery delays.
  • Damage-resistant packing minimizes dents and bent flanges on sheet and cast components, reducing claims and total landed cost.
  • Clear non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and speeds quoting for construction supply and hearth distributors.
