How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits: aluminum ornamental columns or posts with flat or L-shaped cross-sections, shipped in boxes; reference NMFC Note item 36157 if clarification is needed.
- Select rigid cartons sized to length; reinforce ends and edges with foam or plastic angles, and cap both ends to prevent crush. Pack any mounting hardware in separate inner boxes.
- Label the longest dimension and add “Do Not Bend.” For pieces over 96 inches, request an overlength quote; if multiple cartons wobble, unitize by strapping boxed pieces to a pallet.
- On the BOL, use NMFC 36155, Class 77.5 and describe as “aluminum ornamental columns/posts, boxed,” including carton count and dimensions; photograph packaging before sealing for claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass risk and expediting LTL quotes.
- Boxed packaging protects anodized or powder-coated finishes, lowering damage claims and returns.
- Proactive overlength planning curbs unexpected accessorials, improving delivered cost predictability.
- Clear NMFC alignment streamlines procurement and helps negotiate consistent rates for repeat lanes.
