Note 36192: NOTE-Item 110, Sec. 13 will govern, except the words 'two or more' may be substituted for 'three or more.'
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package columns in heavy-duty boxes or custom crates to meet the rating; avoid loose or pallet-only moves that risk damage and reclass.
- Block and brace: install end caps, internal cleats, and edge guards to prevent denting or oil-canning on sheet-iron or tin-clad surfaces.
- Moisture-protect with VCI wrap or poly plus desiccant, then label exterior clearly: Center of Gravity, Lift Points, and Do Not Fork Through Sides.
- On the BOL, describe exactly: “Columns, sheet iron, or wood covered with sheet iron or tin plate — boxed/crated,” cite NMFC 36160, Class 150, and list piece count.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 150—no density math, faster quoting, fewer billing disputes.
- Lower claims risk: compliant boxing/crating shields thin metal skins from punctures, bends, and corner damage.
- Field-ready deliveries: durable crates stack and handle cleanly across LTL terminals, keeping project schedules intact.
- Reduced reclass fees and accessorial surprises by matching packaging to the NMFC description from the start.
