How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle long corner bead and picture molding tightly, cap the ends, add edge protectors, and strap at least twice; keep total length at or under 96 in to avoid overlength fees.
- Pack clips and cove base fastenings in inner bags or dividers inside sturdy cartons, then master-carton and shrink-wrap to a pallet to prevent piece loss.
- Identify material on the BOL (steel, vinyl, aluminum) and note packaging form (bundles or cartons). List commodity as “NMFC 36230 – Corner Bead/Cove Base” for clarity.
- Use load bars or cones and “Do Not Stack” indicators for slender pallets; add foam or corrugated pads between layers to prevent kinks and edge dents.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC identification cuts reclass and reweigh disputes, protecting margins on LTL lanes.
- Consolidating trim, clips, and fastenings on one pallet reduces handling touches and minimum charges.
- Material-specific notes (steel vs. vinyl) guide carriers on protection needs, reducing damage claims and delays.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and streamlines booking, helping secure faster pickups and sharper rates.
