How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid wood crates for ornate or long cresting; screw sections to a backer board, wrap sharp edges, and block/brace to prevent flex or lattice crush.
- If boxing, choose double‑wall cartons with foam or honeycomb pads, then band boxed units to a pallet; add corner protectors and a top cap for stack stability.
- Bag fasteners, clips, and ridge plates separately and secure inside the crate; include a packing list and orientation marks for installers.
- Write the NMFC line as “Cresting, roof, metal, NOI” and select the packaging type (box or crate) on the BOL; mark center of gravity and “Do Not Stack” if the design is delicate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Crating delicate architectural metalwork reduces damage claims and return trips, protecting margins on custom fabrication jobs.
- Accurate NMFC wording (NOI) and declared packaging minimize reclass fees and dispute delays with LTL carriers.
- Nesting segments and mounting to a shared backer board reduces cube and handling time, lowering freight spend per shipment.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection, speeding deliveries to roofers and site crews.
