How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 36280 and Class 70 on the BOL, and itemize the set clearly (e.g., two door leaves plus welded frame and hardware kit).
- Package on a sturdy pallet or in a crate: brace hinges, add corner/edge guards, and band the frame to prevent racking during LTL handling.
- Keep panels flat and fully supported; avoid overhang. Mark Do Not Stack and This Side Up, and protect surface with cardboard and stretch wrap.
- Plan delivery for jobsites: note limited access, request liftgate or appointment if needed, and confirm forklift clearance for long or heavy door sets.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and rating—no density calculations, fewer reclass risks, and faster approvals from carriers.
- Clear NMFC mapping reduces surprise fees and dispute time, protecting margins for distributors and fabricators shipping to contractors.
- Proper crating and edge protection lower damage claims, preventing costly jobsite delays and repeat fabrications.
- Consolidating doors, frames, and hardware on one skid trims handling charges and shortens dwell time at terminals.
