How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Doors, fire, steel, mineral/asbestos core — NMFC 36310, Class 70, non-haz” to prevent reclass and billing disputes.
- Palletize or crate door leaves flat with rigid corner protection and blocking; keep banding off door faces to avoid bowing and skin damage.
- Separate loose hardware and labels from the leaves, wrapping hinges and closers so metal edges don’t mar factory finishes during LTL handling.
- Confirm site needs (jobsite access, liftgate, delivery window). Construction projects often require appointment delivery and no-stacking instructions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable rating, reducing reweigh/reclass fees and keeping quotes consistent across repeated project shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving lane coverage to active jobsites.
- Proper crating and flat, secured palletization cut damage risk on heavy steel leaves, lowering claims and downtime on installations.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds terminal handling and billing, shortening transit exceptions and helping GC schedules stay on track.
