How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use Class 100 on the BOL for elevator shaft enclosure doors, gates, latticework, and railings made of brass, bronze, copper, or nickel-silver—no density calculation needed.
- Choose packaging type based on rigidity: boxed for small panels or hardware kits; crated for long rails or assembled gates to prevent flex and dockside damage.
- Protect polished nonferrous finishes with foam, edge guards, and VCI/anti-tarnish paper; keep fasteners bagged and separated so they cannot mar decorative surfaces.
- Mark pieces clearly as “Elevator Enclosure Components,” list piece count and longest length, and request liftgate or limited-access delivery when shipping to active jobsites.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and avoids density reclass charges for mixed elevator metalwork shipments.
- Lower claim risk: crate-ready guidance and finish protection reduce costly rework on high-value brass and bronze architectural parts.
- Faster tendering: non-hazardous status and a single NMFC for multiple component types streamline carrier approval and pickup scheduling.
- Cleaner audits: accurate packaging declarations (boxes or crates) and consistent class help prevent reweighs, inspections, and administrative fees.
