How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- For strip or roll stock, keep coils tight with fiber or plastic core plugs, add edge protectors, then band at three points and stretch-wrap before strapping to a pallet.
- When shipping nested endwall or sidewall flashing, place corrugated sheets between layers to prevent scuffing, cap sharp corners, and band the nested bundle securely to a skid.
- Mark paperwork with NMFC 36520 and Class 77.5. Density isn’t required for the class, but include accurate piece count, weight, and pallet dimensions for quoting and capacity planning.
- Choose pallets longer than your longest flashing to avoid overhang. Use a top frame for stackability and request non-conveyable handling if pieces exceed typical conveyor lengths.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 77.5 reduce reclass and reweigh disputes.
- Approved packaged forms (nested or strip/roll) let you consolidate site deliveries, cutting handling time and claim risk for delicate aluminum edges.
- Non-hazardous material broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, streamlining tendering and documentation.
- Correct NMFC on the BOL speeds dock processing and rating, improving cycle time and helping secure better LTL freight rates.
