How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Nest the aluminum/lead roof flanges exactly as produced to keep the cube tight and prevent lead deformation during transit.
  2. Choose sturdy boxes or a palletized wood crate; add corrugated liners or foam sheets to separate metal surfaces and reduce abrasion.
  3. Apply steel or poly banding with edge protectors; avoid over‑tensioning that can dent the soft lead collars, and block/brace inside the crate.
  4. Note “NMFC 36530, Class 85” on the BOL and mark “Do Not Top‑Load”; keep packages dry to avoid staining or surface oxidation.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 rating removes density calculations, accelerating quotes and tendering.
  • Nested packing cuts cubic space, which can lower LTL charges and minimize handling.
  • Non-hazardous classification widens carrier availability and reduces compliance overhead.
  • Clear box/crate packaging standard reduces cross-dock damage claims and rework costs.
