How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack flashing, flanges, and rainproofs in rigid boxes or wood crates with edge guards and interleaving sheets (kraft or VCI) to prevent dents and surface rub on soft copper or zinc.
  2. Add moisture protection: line cartons/crates with poly, use desiccant, and avoid treated lumber contacting bare copper to prevent staining during long LTL transits.
  3. State the materials and packaging on the BOL, for example: “Roof flashing/flanges, copper or zinc, boxed/crated — NMFC 36540 (see Note, item 35932).” Include piece count and longest length.
  4. Brace long runs so they won’t bow. Strap to a plywood backer, mark “Do Not Bend,” and ship on skids sized for forklift tines to avoid punctures and handling claims.
