How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle sheet flashing flat on long pallets or skids; interleave with paper or film, add edge protectors, and band securely to prevent bending and sharp-edge damage.
- For roof flanges and rainproofs, nest metal boots where possible, bag gaskets or collars separately, and carton or crate to stop abrasion during LTL handling.
- Add moisture control: use VCI paper for steel or tinplate and isolate any lead-lined pieces with plastic to avoid staining and galvanic reaction in humid transit.
- Mark lengths over 8 ft as long freight, apply “Do Not Stack” and “Sharp Edges” labels, and use top boards so forklift tines don’t crease thin metal.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC reference for roof flashing (see Note item 35932) reduces reclass fees and invoice disputes.
- Flat-packing, nesting, and proper banding lower cube and oversize surcharges, improving LTL rate outcomes.
- Moisture and edge protection cut claims on scuffed tinplate or deformed flanges, lowering total landed cost.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees for faster, simpler routing.
