How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose rigid packaging: double‑wall boxes for small cut pieces or plywood crates for rolls/sheets, with edge guards and slip sheets to prevent lead from deforming or scuffing.
- Block and brace inside the crate so bundles cannot shift; use wood cleats, foam, or dunnage. Keep flat sheets fully supported so they don’t crease in transit.
- Palletize boxes/crates on a sturdy 4‑way pallet, band with steel or heavy poly, and wrap. Avoid top‑loading unless you add a rigid deck to spread weight.
- Note on the BOL: “Lead roof flashing/flanges, boxed or crated, subject to Item 170, non‑hazardous.” Include piece count and accurate weights to speed inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fewer reclasses and inspection delays by matching the NMFC item for lead flashing packed in boxes or crates and acknowledging Item 170 on paperwork.
- Lower damage risk for soft, dense metal goods through proper blocking and full-surface support, reducing OS&D claims and project delays.
- Predictable LTL quoting since the article is clearly defined under building metalwork, helping you benchmark rates across carriers with confidence.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies compliance, cutting administrative time and potential accessorials.
