Notes

Note 36622: NOTE-The height is the dimension of the grille measured from top to bottom in its position as used.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify each grille’s outside height is 26 in or less; if over, select the correct item and review NMFC Note 36622. Capture L × W × H for rating and space planning.
  2. Box individually with rigid edge guards, foam between louvers, and a tight double‑wall carton. Fill voids so the aluminum frame cannot flex during transit.
  3. Label cartons "Do Not Bend," "This Side Up," and "Fragile–Aluminum." Use inner wrap to protect anodized or painted finishes from rub marks.
  4. On the BOL, cite NMFC 36620, Class 85, packaging "boxes," piece count, and exterior carton dimensions. Add photos for claim support and carrier inspection.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 (no density required) streamlines quoting and reduces rating disputes on LTL bids.
  • Meeting the ≤26 in boxed criteria minimizes reclass charges and unexpected accessorials.
  • Protective boxing cuts damage on delicate louvers, lowering replacement costs and jobsite delays.
  • Cartonized grilles stack efficiently, improving trailer cube and overall cost per pound.
