NMFC Description Class
36640.00 Guards or Grilles, door, window or skylight, NOI, iron or steel, other than wire (window grating) 70

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the product is a rigid guard or grille for doors, windows, or skylights made of iron or steel bar/plate—not woven wire—to qualify for NMFC 36640, Class 70.
  2. Use an A-frame or edge-crated pallet; pad corners, cap sharp ends, and wrap to protect coatings. Example: a 48x72 iron window grille strapped at two points with corner boards.
  3. Load panels upright to prevent bowing. Block with 2x4s and secure using steel or heavy poly strapping; add “Do Not Stack” cones for taller grilles.
  4. Bag brackets, anchors, and screws in a small carton and band it to the pallet. Mark the BOL: “NMFC 36640, Class 70, iron/steel grilles—non-wire.”

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass or rebill risk for architectural metalwork.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special handling surcharges, lowering landed costs.
  • Proper crating and upright loading cut damage claims from bent bars or scratched finishes, protecting project timelines.
  • Explicit NMFC labeling speeds dock handling and reduces OS&D exceptions, improving LTL transit reliability.
