Notes
Note 36651: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Review NMFC Note item 36651 before tendering; the class is determined by the note, not density. Describe as metal gutter guards/screens, packaged.
- Choose rigid packaging for long or formed pieces: flat cartons or telescoping tubes, with edge guards, corner protectors, and banding shields to prevent kinks or dents.
- For mesh or perforated screens, wrap in kraft and poly then place in a corrugated carton; avoid loose-on-pallet shipments since this item applies only to goods in packages.
- Label each package with piece count and length (e.g., 20 pcs, 4 ft) to speed cross-dock handling and minimize OS&D issues on LTL moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of Note item 36651 minimizes reclassifications, preventing surprise rebills and protecting quoted freight rates.
- Package-compliant shipments reduce bending and edge damage on thin metal screens, lowering claims and return costs for distributors and contractors.
- Non-hazardous building metalwork streamlines carrier approvals and quoting, shortening the quote-to-ship cycle for time-sensitive projects.
- Unitized, cartonized guards cube efficiently with other building metalwork, improving trailer utilization and reducing cost per unit on LTL lanes.
