How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy cartons with dividers or polybags to stop scuffing and keep corner gusset pairs together; mark inner packs with size and finish.
- Fill voids with kraft paper or foam so aluminum parts don’t rattle in transit; movement can abrade anodized or brushed surfaces.
- Palletize square cartons, apply corner boards, then stretch-wrap and band; label with piece count and “Metal Hardware — Class 85” for quick check-in.
- For project shipments, kit by door type and note PO/job on the box; glaziers and door shops can slot the gussets straight into assembly lines.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes and lowers reclassification risk.
- Non-hazardous aluminum hardware faces fewer carrier restrictions, expanding service options and improving transit reliability.
- Boxed packaging reduces piece loss and finish damage, cutting claims and replacement costs.
- No density-based rating means less admin work—no density certs—speeding rate shopping and tendering.
