How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference items 36822, 36823, and 36824 on the BOL to support the NOI designation and confirm the “in packages” requirement.
- Protect decorative details—scrolls, finials, and coated surfaces—using foam wrap, edge guards, and corrugated sleeves; crate long rails or gate panels.
- Palletize firmly: band to a skid with blocking, brace protrusions, and mark Do Not Stack; measure including brackets to avoid oversize fees.
- For mixed sets (balusters, brackets, panels), bundle by type in inner cartons, then overpack in a crate to reduce abrasion and simplify piece counts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NOI citation with packaging proof minimizes reclass and rebill risk, stabilizing LTL freight rates.
- Damage prevention on finished metal cuts claims, avoids re-fabrication, and keeps construction schedules on track.
- Stackable, crated packages boost trailer utilization and can unlock sharper pricing with select carriers.
- Consolidating smaller iron pieces into one master package reduces handling touches and common accessorials.
