How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize wall pockets upright or nested with wood blocking and steel banding to prevent flange distortion; cap with plywood to stop top-load crush.
- Protect primed surfaces with foam interleave and stretch wrap; for plain steel, add VCI paper to control flash rust during multi-day transit.
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 36900 – Wall Pockets, Class 85” and list piece counts for frames and trim kits separately to avoid shortages at delivery.
- Plan site delivery needs common to schools and arenas—request a liftgate or forklift and avoid side-loading that can kink recess edges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees and paperwork delays.
- Finish-safe packing minimizes scuffs on primed steel, cutting rework, repaint, and punch-list costs.
- Consolidating multiple recess pockets per skid lowers handling touches, reduces claim risk, and improves install sequencing on the jobsite.
