How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Nest the steel roof edging tightly and band with strapping plus edge protectors; for example, align 10–12 ft lengths nose-to-tail to keep bundles straight.
  2. Wrap bundles to prevent scuffing and tag each package count clearly; palletize when possible or add dunnage under non-palletized bundles for forklift forks.
  3. Mark the BOL: “Roof Edge/Binding, Steel — NMFC 37000, Class 70.” Include overall length and note any piece over 8 ft to preempt overlength fees.
  4. Load long packages on continuous support, avoid top-stacking, and use blocking to stop movement during transit; keep weight centered for safe handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 70 reduces quote variance and reclass risks.
  • Nested, packaged steel trim improves handling efficiency and lowers damage claims.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and speeds up tender-to-pickup timelines.
  • Clear NMFC alignment cuts accessorials from reweigh/reclass and streamlines audits.
