Notes
Note 37021: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm items are metal and shipped in packages (bundles, cartons, wrapped lengths) to align with NMFC 37020; check the note under item 37021 for mixed contents or special cases.
- For long gutter or downspout sections, cap the ends, add corner/edge protectors, and strap to a rigid skid or runners to prevent bending and crush damage.
- Nest and bag small fittings (elbows, hangers, end caps) by size, then box and label clearly; keep boxes together on a pallet to avoid OS&D issues.
- List precise details on the BOL: “metal roof gutters/eavestroughs or downspouts, in packages, NMFC 37020,” include lengths and pallet count to anticipate any overlength handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lanes, enabling faster transit to job sites, wholesalers, and distributors at better freight rates.
- Clear BOL language referencing item 37021 note minimizes disputes, cuts claim exposure, and saves admin time across quoting and billing.
