NMFC Description Class
37160.00 Skylight Frames, iron or steel:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Protect long, rigid members with corner guards, V-boards, and banding over wood spacers so straps don’t deform channels or flanges.
  2. Choose packaging by build stage: bundle bare frames on a skid for shop-to-jobsite moves, or fully crate finished, painted frames to avoid scuffs.
  3. Measure the full footprint including protruding curbs and flanges; note overlength (8–12 ft+) to plan for non-stackable LTL and avoid accessorial surprises.
  4. Add moisture barriers or VCI wrap for raw steel, clearly mark lift points, and use blocking so forks can’t slide into frame openings.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Damage reduction through edge protection and proper blocking cuts claim risk and keeps installation timelines intact.
  • Accurate dimensions and overlength notations prevent reweigh/reclass fees and reduce detention from carrier rework.
  • Standard pallet footprints or tight bundles improve trailer utilization, lowering LTL rates versus loose, irregular pieces.
  • Clear non-hazardous designation and precise item descriptions speed carrier acceptance and quoting for construction schedules.
