How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure end-to-end including vent operators, hinges, and flanges; quote using the largest outside dimensions to avoid reclass from protrusions.
- Palletize or crate: band frames to a skid with cross-braces, add foam corner protectors, and block moving ventilator parts to prevent actuation in transit.
- Mark orientation and stacking limits: use Up arrows and Do Not Stack cones for tall frames that can rack or twist; request non-stackable accessorials if needed.
- Share drawings or photos with your 3PL/carrier when class is unclear; note this item falls under Building Metalwork and is non-hazmat.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate dims and packaging reduce density disputes and reclass fees on bulky architectural metalwork.
- Crating fragile edges and locking vents lowers OS&D claims and warranty costs for rooftop projects.
- Grouping multiple frames per pallet cuts handling touches and improves LTL rates through better cube utilization.
- Clear non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and speeds tender-to-pickup for tight construction timelines.
