How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the alloy and classification on the BOL: “NMFC 37230, Class 85 – non‑ferrous (e.g., copper, brass, bronze)” to prevent steel misrating.
- Package in bundles or cartons with nose/edge protection and face sheets; for mineral‑filled anti‑slip inserts, use rigid cartons or light crates to prevent cracking.
- Palletize lengthwise with blocking, edge protectors, and non‑slip dunnage; strap securely, wrap, and mark Do Not Stack if treads can bow or dent.
- Provide total weight and outer dimensions for the quote and label, and select “packages” as the packaging type since the class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing billing adjustments.
- Clear NMFC 37230 labeling distinguishes non‑ferrous treads from steel, avoiding misclass charges and metal‑type surcharges.
- Damage‑smart packaging (edge protection, rigid cartons) cuts claims and keeps construction schedules on track.
- Predictable costs help stair fabricators and distributors bid confidently and control margins on multi‑stop LTL lanes.
