How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize treads flat with wood dunnage between layers, then band twice lengthwise and once crosswise; add corner protectors to shield sharp nosings.
- Bundle loose risers in countable sets (e.g., 10), wrap bare iron with VCI or film to limit rust bloom, and stencil bundle weight for safe forklift handling.
- Limit pallet height to about 28–32 inches to reduce tipping risk and use 4-way pallets so carriers can approach from any side.
- Print NMFC 37220 and Class 55 on the BOL; as NOI iron, no density calculation is needed unless mixed with non-iron items.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 eliminates density debates, lowering the chance of costly reclass and surprise adjustments.
- Damage mitigation from proper bundling and edge protection keeps nosed edges intact, reducing claims and installation delays.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, often improving LTL pricing.
- One NMFC for both treads and risers enables SKU consolidation on a single shipment, improving minimum charge utilization.
