How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging to fit the shape: heavy-duty boxes for simple caps, or a custom wood crate for louvered or flanged tops that need internal bracing.
- Protect edges and collars with foam, corner boards, and blocking to prevent denting. Fill voids so the set-up unit cannot shift inside the box or crate.
- Mark orientation and handling notes: “This Side Up,” “Do Not Stack,” and “Fragile Metalwork.” Band the box or crate to a pallet for safer forklift handling.
- On the BOL, list: “NMFC 37330 – Ventilator Tops, chimney or roof, steel, SU – Class 150.” Select Non-Hazmat and request liftgate or jobsite appointment if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 150 rating—no density math means faster, cleaner LTL quotes and fewer reclassification disputes.
- Proper boxing/crating minimizes transit damage to finished steel surfaces, reducing claims and costly delays on roofing or chimney projects.
- Non-hazardous classification simplifies carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat fees, streamlining tendering and scheduling.
- Crating multiple tops together can cut handling touches and accessorial risk, improving per-unit freight cost for distributors and sheet-metal shops.
