How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize bundled vents on wood runners, strap with polyester banding, and add edge protectors to prevent bent louvers or frames.
- Print the BOL as: “NMFC 37360, Class 85 – Ventilators, Foundation, Cast Aluminum Alloy, Bundled” to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
- Record piece counts and bundle dimensions per pallet; class is fixed, but carriers plan space and load sequencing with these details.
- Do not stack heavy steel or masonry above; cast aluminum can crack under point loads. Use dunnage sheets to spread weight if stacking is necessary.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means no density math, lowering reweigh and reclass fees and keeping quotes consistent.
- Bundled packaging speeds loading and reduces handling touches, cutting the risk of bent fins and damaged frames.
- Lightweight cast aluminum helps trim LTL charges compared to steel alternatives, improving cost per delivered unit.
- Non-hazardous commodity moves on most carrier networks without surcharges, enabling broader lane options and faster tendering.
