How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 37660 and Class 200 on the BOL and describe the goods as “stave wood columns, packaged” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Package to preserve column roundness: cap both ends, add edge and corner protection, wrap with moisture barrier, then band securely so staves cannot shift.
- For long lengths (e.g., 8–12 ft), use a supportive skid or runners under the package, mark “Do Not Top Stack,” and request long-freight handling when tendering.
- Count each package accurately and photograph the packed columns before pickup to document condition and packaging compliance for OS&D claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 removes density calculations, enabling faster, more predictable LTL quotes and simpler rating workflows.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, reducing total landed cost.
- Correct “in packages” prep minimizes crush/ovalization damage, lowering claims and costly rework for builders and millwork shops.
- Accurate NMFC/BOL details reduce reclass penalties and inspection holds, improving on-time delivery to jobsites and restoration projects.
