How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product meets the grillwork definition per the item 37504 note (decorative wood grille panels or screens), then apply NMFC 37970 at Class 85.
- Use the specified packaging only: ship in sturdy boxes (double-wall with foam wrap, edge protectors, and internal bracing) or in cross-braced wood crates.
- For fragile slats or louvers, float the piece inside the container with spacers, keep fasteners in a sealed pouch, and mark panels ‘Do Not Stack’ and ‘Fragile’.
- Palletize multiple boxes or a crate, strap and corner-board the load, and print the BOL with “Grillwork – NMFC 37970 – Class 85” to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 means no density calculations and faster LTL quotes.
- Lower claim risk: compliant crating/boxing resists racking and edge crush, reducing damage and reship costs.
- Fewer billing disputes: citing NMFC 37970 on the BOL helps prevent carrier reclass charges and inspections.
- Operational efficiency: palletized boxes or a single crate improves handling, shortens dock time, and can reduce accessorials.
